Working for NSW is more than just a job. A career in NSW Government is for people who want to make a tangible and lasting difference in our community.

As Australia’s largest employer, NSW Government includes many departments and agencies who work together to develop policy and deliver important services such as health, education, housing, justice, transport and infrastructure across our state.

As a proud employer who values diversity, NSW Government is committed to reflecting the community we serve by creating an inclusive workplace for all. Whether you are delivering services or designing policies, there is a place for everyone, inclusive of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and personal commitments.

We are looking for talented and passionate graduates to build on this work and become leaders of tomorrow. In our program, graduates complete three unique rotations based on their functional areas of interest and desired location. Our graduates also have access to unique networking and development opportunities.

In 2021, our Program was ranked number 1 in the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Graduate Employers List and received the Chandler Macleod Most Popular Government & Defence Employer Award for the fourth year running.

About the Program

The NSW Government Graduate Program gives graduates an opportunity to shape and change the future of NSW. The program offers a primary stream, which is open to all degrees and disciplines, and degree-specific streams designed for graduates looking to transition into specific occupations.

With three six-month rotations across government agencies, the 18-month program offers an incredibly diverse experience that allows you to explore opportunities and build your own career in the primary stream, or work towards a specific career path in the degree-specific streams.

From day one, you will play an integral role in exciting and important projects, allowing you to build a strong foundation of skills for your career. You will also have a personal mentor and executive sponsor, and many opportunities to engage with your cohort and develop your professional network. Graduates who successfully complete the program are offered a permanent position with the NSW Government.

About the Program Streams

Primary Stream

Graduates who are looking to launch their career in government and want to be exposed to a range of different functional areas of interest should consider the primary stream. Graduates will work on a variety of policy, project and program initiatives that contribute to the future of our state. You will also work towards a Diploma of Government qualification, which helps to ease the transition from university to work life and provides foundational government knowledge.

Legal Stream

Designed for graduates looking to have a legal career within NSW Government, the Legal Stream offers work across different agencies and experience in litigation, providing legal advice and developing policy, while working towards a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. To be eligible for this stream, you will have recently completed a law degree (in the last two years) and be willing to study towards a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

Applications for the 2022 program open on 5 July 2021. Register your interest in the 2022 program
