Your role

Student Nurse Technicians (SNT) function as a member of the nursing team, assisting licensed nurses in the care of patients receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance & hospice care. SNT is given opportunities to provide basic nursing care & procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the class, validated by VA staff to provide care to patients with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. SNTs function under the direct supervision of a licensed RN.

Duties:

  • This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
  • Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings.
  • The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
  • The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
  • Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA vehicles.
  • The SNT commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The novice brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills. Performs other duties as assigned by RN preceptor.

Conditions of Employment:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must be accepted for/currently enrolled in a qualified educational institution: Students must be enrolled in a nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Be able to work full-time during the summer months and part-time during the academic year.
  • Not be under a service obligation to any federal, state, or private institution or be a recipient of any federal scholarship that incurs a service obligation to another organization.

  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Work Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per month, maximum 40 hours per week. Rotating shifts with flexibility around school schedule days, evenings, and nights.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens by VA Policy.
  • Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below, Grade determination:

  • GS-2 Completed High school or equivalent.
  • GS-3 Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study
  • GS-4 Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate degree
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps.
  • You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited based on time spent in appropriate activities.
