Your role

Duties and responsibilities:

Organisational Setting and Reporting In its resolution A/RES/72/279, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the transformation of DCO as a stand-alone coordination office within the United Nations Secretariat. DCO assumes managerial and oversight functions of the resident coordinator system under the collective ownership of the members of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG).

The position is located in the Communications and Results Reporting Section of the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO) Headquarters in New York and is for six (6) months. The Intern would work remotely under the supervision of the Digital Strategist and the Public Information Officers in the Communications and Results Reporting section.

Responsibilities:

The section is looking for motivated candidates who wish to gain hands-on experience in the UN, particularly in:

Editorial and Multimedia Content:

  • Identifying, researching, and drafting content (text, photos, documents, and multimedia) for publication on the website and social media platforms related to upcoming global Conferences on Small Island Developing States and Landlocked Developing Countries.
  • Brainstorming and piloting new storytelling formats for targeted audiences, including youth, on DCO’s websites ahead of and during the 2024 Summit of the Future.
  • Creating and editing infographics and social videos to accompany stories relatable to global, regional, and local audiences on various channels and languages.

AI-related experimentation:

  • Undertaking research on various functionalities of Microsoft’s CoPilot and other AI tools in the public domain relevant to communications and results reporting.
  • Identifying areas for experimentation and innovation within various communications workstreams.
  • Participating in research and providing inputs about good practices in AI for good.
  • Liaising with DCO’s AI Lab and country teams to help test various use cases on AI-assisted communications, documenting lessons and replicability.
  • Making recommendations to the team on new tools and practices to test.

Knowledge Management and Communications:

  • Supporting in the development and maintenance of a stories and digital content repository.
  • Contributing to website restructuring, tagging, and quality assurance.
  • Assisting in optimizing websites for correctness, accessibility, and search engine performance.
  • Contributing to monitoring the usage of website and social media accounts using analytics and other statistical tools and techniques.
  • Undertaking events coverage and notetaking as necessary.
  • Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists for the Section and assisting in distributing various information products.
  • Contributing to updating social media inventories of the UN country team and Resident Coordinators’ accounts.

Training & development

During the internship, you will develop expertise in researching and producing multimedia content for global events, explore AI tools for communications experimentation, and contribute to knowledge management and digital communications strategies, fostering skills in content creation, AI integration, and digital media management within the UN context.

About you

Eligibility Criteria for United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme:

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Development Coordination Office, applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Applicants Eligibility:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program or final year of a first university degree program in journalism, communication, media studies, digital communications, filmmaking, international relations, or a related field.
  • Graduated with a university degree in the mentioned fields and must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

Skills Requirements:

  • Strong writing skills in English.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe (InDesign, Illustrator), and design and email marketing platforms like Bee Pro, Canva, and Mailchimp.
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications and content management systems, including Drupal 10. Experience or interest in AI-assisted communications is advantageous.

Additional Criteria:

  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, displaying a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of any additional official UN language is an advantage.

Intern-specific text:

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
